The wine has deep ruby color with very light garnet reflections. The nose opens with berry, wood and spice notes combined with violet and a depth of freshness and lovely purity. The palate is fresh and bright, with well-rounded fruit and excellent balance, revealing notes of dark cherry, blackberry, slightly cedar-like spice, and violet. In the mid-palate and finish, find some red cherry and raspberry, and also hints of arbutus bush, juniper and heather with terrific definition, tension and accuracy, all reflecting the terroir from which it is produced. The tannins are fine-grained and silky. Good length, good acidity, and lots of elegance deliver a seductive wine, perfectly balanced, well-structured, with transparency and finesse.
Harvest Notes
2019 is a year that will be sure to be remembered thanks to a perfect phenolic and technological maturity and for the excellent quantity of grapes brought to the cellar. This vintage was everything producers look for. A sunny year, with temperatures between 30 and 35°C, and with the right amount of well distributed rain, in particular at the end of July and August, that contributed to a perfect maturity of the grapes. No frost in spring or hail storms in summer to which we have unfortunately become more accustomed to over the last few years. Also, the harvest took place smoothly during a window of time when the weather was mild and dry. Excellent vintage.
Decanter –November 2023 – 95 PTS (Michaela Morris) Tasted by: Michaela Morris (at Chiostro Museo Montalcino, 14 Nov 2023) Drinking Window: 2025 - 2037. Produced from a single vineyard sitting at 540 metres on pietranera, a hard black sandstone, Le Due Porte ages in two 10-hectolitre casks. Though less effusively scented than the estate Brunello, it heightens the exotic red fruit character of the latter. The palate is pure watermelon and pomegranate, peppered with arbutus bush, juniper and heather. Tight, fine-grained tannins are well-formed but not shy – they’ll need time to tease apart. Elegant with a long, salivating finish. Just 2,500 bottles produced, with a projected release date of late 2024.
Vinous – June 2024 – 95 PTS (Eric Guido) Opening up like a basket of freshly picked raspberries complemented by hints of clove, worn leather and dusty earth, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Le Due Porte slowly comes to life in the glass. This sweeps across the palate with soft and round textures while maintaining a lifted and finessed character throughout, as tart berries and hints of red plum saturate. It finishes classically dry and structured, leaving fine tannins and a pleasantly bitter tinge of sour cherries to linger on and on. This fantastic rendition of Le Due Porte is geared up for a long and lovely maturation.
