If you are looking for an add-on to a few days of admiring cypresses and tasting Brunello, look no further! For over a decade in our cellar I have mentiond “Brunella” to incredulous guests. Between 6 and 8 metres long and with an estimated weight of around 6 tons this prehistoric whale is massive tangible proof of the presence of marine fossils in our area and all that this means for terroir and grapes. Finally, more than ten years after she was discovered near Montalcino, this wonderful four million year old creature is being carefully cleaned and reassembled by an expert team, financed by the Banfi vineyards.The recent discovery of shark teeth embedded in her vertebra suggest that she came to a violent end. She is considered to be one of the best preserved Mediterranean fossil specimens and as the work continues,  more will be discovered about her habits and environment.The restoration laboratory is located behind the Castello Banfi Enoteca and visitors are welcome from Monday to Friday between noon and 1pm or between 5 and 6pm.
